One cent coin is also known as the United States penny is a currency that equals one-hundredth of a U.S. dollar. The US is minting the penny since 1793 and is still used by people. The term penny was first derived from a British coin of the same name.

It is a plural form that refers unit of currency. The official name is the one-cent coin. Before 1909 Lady Liberty was featured on the penny but after 1909 President Lincons’s face is featured on each penny.

The first penny was designed by Benjamin Franklin in accordance with US Mint. He used interlinked chains to symbolize unity during the revolutionary war era. And as some by mistake thought it was meaning of slavery and for this reason the chain was soon replaced by a wreath. The current penny is designed by Victor D. Brenner.

The first produced penny was made of 100% copper and weighed 13.48 grams or 0.475 ounces. They were over 5 times heavy than the current pennies minted today. And all the pennies that are produced between 1795 to 1857 were weighed around 10.89 grams or 0.384 ounces.

From 1856 to 1864, for the first time, the US reduced the composition of the penny. They reduced copper amount to around 88% and included 12% nickel and the new weight of the penny was 4.67 grams or 0.164 ounces.

Since 1982 the US has minted two different types of pennies. The first one is the Lincoln penny which weighs around 2.5 grams or 0.088 ounces consisting of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. The other one is the union shield penny weighing 3.11 grams or 0.109 ounces.

Before the Lincoln pennies, the US produced Indian Head pennies. The first series was minted in 1859 and were weighing 4.67 grams and consisted of 88% copper and 12% nickel.

The final Canadian penny was withdrawn from circulation on 4 February 2013. Although pennies minted after the year 1982 are still in use for legal tender at this time. All the Canadian pennies minted from 1982 to 1996 weighed 2.5 grams or 0.088 ounces. And pennies that are minted from 1997 to 1999 weighed 2.25 grams. Also those are minted from 2000 to 2012 weighed 2.35 grams.
